Madison County Blue Ridge Mountain December Snow

Traveling south from Culpeper on route 29. There is a clear view of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Madison County. I caught a snow storm coming over the mountains this afternoon. Not much snow in the lower altitudes. The mountains are blue with a soft shade of white. There are few views that rival this one when the seasons change. See an earlier blog post from the spring.

Depot Christmas Card - Merry Christmas from Culpeper VA

I took this picture tonight as I was leaving the Depot.  It was cold and quiet. I saw the tree so bright, an adornment to the Town. It made me pause and consider Christmas and how many things there are to be thankful for. As I posted the picture, it reminded me of a Christmas card. So here it is,  Merry Christmas from Culpeper Virginia.

Culpeper Holiday Open House - Holiday Music

A perfect day to enjoy the Christmas music, stroll the downtown,
enjoy great food, shop at world class stores, and enjoy the perfect weather.
All in Old Town Culpeper Virginia

Culpeper Holiday Open House - Mini Donut anyone?

Come to Downtown Culpeper today and say hello to "Donut".  She is visiting the downtown today to celebrate the Holiday Open House. Donut says that Santa should be here any minute and she cannot wait to give him her Christmas list. Could she be thinking Chocolates from the Frenchman's Corner, a new accessory from Reigning Cats & Dogs, possibly a new Radio Flyer Wagon to pull her young friends in from Clark Hardware. I hear that she also likes Brighton from Pepperberries (wink wink). Lots of options here today. "Donut" struck a pose for her favorite Non-Profit - Cavallini di Amore "Love of Miniture Horses" (and Donkeys) who support her in great ways with Brandy Manor Miniatures. What a great day to visit Culpeper to shop for the Holiday's.

Madison County Virginia Scenic Route 29

Enter at your own risk. This was a
combination that I could not pass up.
Completely coincidental - Ox and Cart
with the Bright Red "Welcome"
flag in the background. Watch for
this as you travel south from Culpeper
through Madison County on Route 29.
The next right leads to a fine vintage stop...

Street Art @ Downtown Culpeper VA

The Lion looks so relaxed and yet with
Eyes Wide Open...
What is the Lion saying?
What does he see?
It is worth a cup of coffee and a stroll by to investigate.
One of many street art compositions near the
Amtrak Station known as The Depot.
Something to do while waiting for the
Northeast Regional to Washington DC or Boston

Paranormal Activity in Culpeper

Magnificent Fall Foliage Illuminated
by the sunrise. Someone forgot to tell
the Three Friendly Ghosts. I even got
a few waves from them... I guess they
are getting ready for Halloween.
The avenue's will be full of
Trick-or-Treaters tomorrow night.
Not quite Paranormal for Culpeper,
Small Town fun - quite normal.

Guilty Black Snake in Culpeper?

Drove up next to this Black Snake. It did not move.
It just stayed in one place as if I was not supposed
to see it. When you open the full picture,
the snake eyes look guilty of something.
Could have something to do with all of
those unusual ripples in the body.
Life in Culpeper....

A favorite place in Old Town Culpeper. The

This photo has the makings of a local painting.
The house appears to be smiling at passers by.
A friendly greeting to the autumn season.

Jenkins Orchard - Woodville VA - Black Twig Apples

A rare find in Apple Varieties - Black Twig Apples
can be found at Jenkin's Orchard while supplies last.
Hearty, Sweet, with a bit of a wine flavor. They have a
longer than normal shelf life. Take Culpeper Route
522 North West, pass thru Woodville and make a
left to the Orchard just before Sperryville.
They offer a wide variety of apples.

Super Decathlon - Culpeper AirFest 2010 - What a Poser

You can almost hear the Weeeee as the Super
Decathlon seems to be smling in flight. The wheels look

The 11th Annual Culpeper Airfest in perfect weather.

The changing tree colors in the background add a bright contrast.

Culpeper Airfest 2010 - Vought F4U Corsair

This is one BAD Prop. I watched this bird jump
off of the run way, scream down the flight path, go vertical, and
bank hard left to takeoff tonight. She was as magnificent
tonight as she must have been in WWII. The Enemy
used to call her Whistling Death for her diving sound
just before releasing her fury. This is one of the finest looking
aircraft that I have ever seen. Power and Beauty in One.
Come to the Culpeper 11th Annual Airfest to see this
and more tomorrow Saturday October 9th from 10 AM  - 4 PM.

Culpeper Sports Complex

The soccer fields are among the best in the region.
Most visiting teams from Northern Virginia,

Ears of Corn, Eyes of Glory - The Fall Culpeper Story

The Morning Glories peaked out from the
ears of corn like the eyes of a fictional
field character. The stalks squeaked
together and the crickets chirped
to bring the field alive on the
last day of summer - looking
forward to Fall....

Culpeper Food Closet @ St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Consider making this a regular stop. As Fall arrives
and Winter approaches, the need increases. If you
are in downtown Culpeper, donating is easy and
convenient. The Food Closet is in the rear of the
Historic St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.

Foreshadowing Fall - Autumn Colors in September

Perfect landing near Culpeper Airport.
A good attempt to use the grass as camo.
Unfortunately the grass is still green in
September.  I love the pattern symmetry
of the wings in contrast with
the random layers of grass
drenched in sunshine.

Hawk Eye Culpeper Virginia

Driving along a roadway in Culpeper Virginia,
I spotted this Hawk watching the cars go by.
I stopped rolled the window down and took
several pics. The eye of the hawk and the detail
of the head feathers remind me of an eagle.

Summer Harvest for Culpeper Monarch

Walking in one of the many open fields
 in Culpeper County. This Monarch
butterfly moved from clover
to clover. She was not
looking for the 4 leaf
 clover. Her summer
harvest
was in full bloom.
I tried to sneak up behind
her to catch a full wing spread.
This was the best that she would
allow. Probably showing her best side :-)

Graffiti House - Brandy Station - Jeb Stuart Signature?

The image is a photo of one of the Civil War Period
signatures found on the wall of the Graffeti House.
There are confirmed signatures from many soldiers with
accompanying stories about them at the house in Culpeper
County Virginia. The card at the bottom shows an authentic
replica of a Jeb Stuart signature. Is the one on the wall from the
General James Ewell Brown "Jeb" Stuart while he was preparing for the
Battle of Brandy Station, the largest calvary battle of the Civil War?
Visit and judge for yourself.

Empire Apples @ Jenkins Orchard Woodville Virginia

How many types of apples are grown at Jenkins Orchard?
The very best way to find out is to begin your search from
Culpeper Virginia and take the hypnotically beautiful drive
along Route 522. As you travel down tree covered two lane roads
in the Fall, the sighs of freedom from busy Northern Virginia
allow your mind to soak in the colors of the mountains. Traveling thru
the charming town of Woodville Virginia and just before Sperryville
Virginia the sign for Jenkins Orchard indicates a left turn.
Three miles to the Orchard will feel like a trip over the river
and thru the woods...

Culpeper Museum of History - Dinosaur Foot Prints

This Prehistoric Dinosaur is a reminder that there are
actual Dinosaur footprints found in a Culpeper quarry
on display at the Culpeper Museum of History.
Displays are updated regularly sharing the Prehistoric,
Early American, Colonial American, Civil War Period,
and Early Modern History of Culpeper.
The Museum is one of the finest considering much of the
genealogy of early Virginia and the United States
are rooted in the Culpeper area.

Dragon Fly @ Lake Pelham - Culpeper Virginia

This Dragon Fly is posing on a branch at
Lake Pelham. The details of the arms holding the
bronze branch are my favorite part of this image.
The contrast of the clear sky and the simplicity
of the branch make it look like the Dragon Fly
is carrying the branch rather than resting on it.
Another part of life in Culpeper Virginia.

Burgandine House Culpeper Virginia

A period actor poses in costume for scheduled
tours of the Burgandine House. Reported to be the oldest
standing house in Culpeper. The house was built
circa 1749-50. The house has a surprising
amount of space and a loft which is an
unusual feature of the time period.

Monarch Butterfly @ Lake Pelham

There were 2 Monarch Butterfly's flying together.
This one landed long enough to capture a picture.
My favorite part of this picture is the gold tassel
on each blade of grass. A Royal setting for the Monarch.

Honey Bee @ Culpeper Farmers Market BUZZ

Bob of Amissville Bees had a guest visitor come to
his booth this afternoon. He placed some honey on
his finger and the bee stayed and ate the honey
until it was gone. The bee flew away to come back
for seconds when Bob had placed more honey on
his finger. Bob said that a Bee did that for 4 days
recently. If Bee's like his honey.... I just had to buy
some to find out what all of the BUZZ was about!
